Sixth Form at Leon Browne Academy - Chapter Two

“Dude, we are ridiculously early,” I groaned to my brother, gesturing at the empty parking lot.

“Well, duh! School officially resumes at 8:30am, and this is 7:04am,” he said while glancing at his watch.

“Remind me whose fantastic idea it was to get here so early?”

“Can’t you see? This is perfect. We get to have this place to ourselves for at least an hour. I want to explore every inch.”

“Come on. This is how every horror movie starts. I say we find the admissions office and get onboarded.”

“How about we get onboarded, and then we roam the halls?”

From my sixteen years of experience with my twin, I knew that when Sola got curious like this, there was no stopping him.

I just sighed and said, “For the record, let it be noted that I did try to talk you out of this, but you insisted. Anyway, I'm in.”

“Yay. I knew you'd see the vision.”

Ugh. Here we go.

We quickly said our goodbyes to Mr Williams and headed towards the campus.

I vaguely remembered that there used to be a receptionist right at the end of the entrance hall.

Our cousin, Jade, previously attended the academy. We'd come for his graduation. Although this was five years ago, I hoped it was still as I remembered.

We walked into the entrance hall, and the first thing I saw was endless rows of student awards dating back to 1967.

“Wow,” exclaimed my brother.

“You could say that again, brother. This is incredible. There's at least a thousand awards here.” I said to him.

He nodded in confirmation while still gazing around. We walked farther and saw that the awards had been replaced with pictures capturing significant moments from each school year since the school's inception.

Further ahead were school uniforms on display, the way I imagined Micheal Jackson's outfits to be displayed at a museum. Or Batman displaying his various costumes at the cave.

“Hello, kids. You're quite early. Lower sixth, I presume?” I turned to see a smartly dressed middle-aged woman. Maybe she was part of the staff?

“Yes, ma. Good morning. I'm Simi Agbaje, starting Year 12, and this is –”

“I'm Sola Agbaje, also Year 12,” my brother interjected.

“Ah, I remember you two. You're the only set of twins this year. I'm Mrs Arike Johnson, your guidance counselor,” she said.

“I'm also an early bird, but I'm glad you guys are early too. Let's head over to admissions so you can get your IDs and a school map.”

“Thank you, ma.”

“Oh. Just call me Mrs Johnson.”

“Yes, ma, oops, Mrs Johnson.”

“That's alright, you'll get the hang of it.”

We followed her down the hall, but the reception was no longer there.

Instead, there was a series of elevators at the end of the hall. We turned right, into another hall, and she knocked on the first door that was tagged, Admission Office.

“Rosie, the first set of students has arrived. Please get them situated.”

“Hi Arike. Oh, welcome, kids. Are you excited for today?”

“Very much so, ma. This is our dream school.” Sola was turning on the charm.

“We're happy to hear that. You must be very bright students because we only accept the best of the best. You both must be proud of this accomplishment. You're welcome.”

“Thank you, ma.” He responded.

“So what are your names?” she asked us.

“I’m Olusola Agbaje.”

“I'm Similoluwa Agbaje.”

“Ah, the twins. Welcome. You'll enjoy our beautiful campus. We've got something for everybody. Here you go. These are your IDs and your welcome packs,” she said, handing us each LBA-branded backpacks that seemed to weigh a ton.”

“Thank you, ma.”

“All Year 12 students are on the first floor. Simply take the elevator, you're both in classroom A101.”

“Thanks a lot, ma.” We said as we carried our bags and left the office.

The admin staff generally seemed nice. I loved that. I guess we were off to a wonderful academic year.
